INCHGARVIE, an isle, in the parish of InverKEiTHiNG, county of Fife. This is a small islet in the Firth of Forth, about half a mile south of Queensferry in the parish of Inverkeithing, and double this distance from Queensferry on theopposite shore of Linlithgowshire. In the reign of James IV., a fort was erected here, which was latterly used as a state prison; and this fort, or another built on its site, is still remaining on the summit of the isle, in ruins. Owing to the alarm occasioned by the appearance of Paul Jones and his squadron in the Firth, in 1*79, the fortifications were renewed, and four twenty-four pounders were mounted upon them; but they have been since removed.
