MEADOWMILL, a village, in that portion of the
parish of Tranent which formed part of the quoad
sacra parish of Cockenzie, county of Haddington;
containing \10 inhabitants. This village, of recent
origin, occupies a site memorable as the scene of the
battle of Prestonpans, and as the spot where Col. Gardiner
was killed, while endeavouring to rally a body of
infantry that had been engaged in the conflict. It is
inhabited chiefly by persons employed in agricultural
pursuits; and the children of the village receive instruction
in the free school attached to Stiell's Hospital,
which is situated a little to the south. The hospital, a
handsome and capacious building, was erected in IS^l,
at an expense of £3000, and contains arrangements for
the maintenance and education of a limited number of
boys and girls.
