NITSHILL, a village, in the parish of Abbey in the town of Paisley, Upper ward of the county of Renfrew, 4 miles (S. E.) from Renfrew; containing 821 inhabitants. This place is situated in the south-eastern part of the parish, and on the high road from Paisley to Strathaven. The district around it abounds in coal; and in the village and its neighbourhood, extensive mineral and other considerable works are carried on. In 180*, copperas-works were established here by a company, who subsequently purchased a similar concern at the village of Hurlet, in the vicinity, which they converted into an alum manufactory. On the banks of the Levern, a short distance from the village, are several bleaching and print fields.
