PABBAY, an island, in the parish of Harris, county of Inverness; containing 338 inhabitants. This isle lies at the mouth of the sound of Harris, and is distant northward from Bernera about four miles; it is of nearly circular form, and measures in diameter two miles and a half. Its shape is conical, terminating in a peak considerably higher than any other islands in the sound. Pabbay at one time supplied the district with corn, and was called the granary of Harris; but from the sanddrifts which now cover its south-east side, it has lost much of its fertility; and on the north-west, where it is exposed to the spray of the Atlantic, scarcely any vegetation is to be seen. Towards the south-west, however, which is in some degree sheltered by Bernera, it is very productive, and well cultivated.
