SANDHEAD, a village, in the parish of Stoney-KiRK, county of Wigtown, 2 miles (S. S. E.) from the village of Stoneykirk; containing 140 inhabitants. This small village is situated on the western shore of the bay of Luce, and chiefly inhabited by persons engaged in fishing. The fish caught are principally cod, which are to be found in abundance, especially in the Irish Channel; and various kinds of shell-fish are thrown on the sands; but of neither description is more taken than is sufficient for the supply of the inhabitants of the district. Sandhead bay is capacious, easy of access, and affords safe accommodation for the vessels engaged in the fishery, and good anchorage for sloops, which bring cargoes of lime and coal from Whitehaven, Glasgow, and Liverpool. A post-office under the office at Stranraer has been established in the village, and there are small inns.
