STANE, a village, in the parish of Cambusnethan, Middle ward of the county of Lanark, ^ a mile (S. E.) from Shotts Iron-Works; containing 570 inhabitants. This village is situated in the north-eastern part of the parish, and on the south side of the South Calder water, by which it is separated from the parish of Shotts. The neighbourhood is the seat of the principal coal-field of the iron-works at Shotts; and the population has consequently considerably increased, since their establishment, in this quarter of the parish. One of two endowed schools of the parish is at Stane.
