INTRODUCTION.

[In an attempt to make the registers of Edward Foxe and Edmund Boner stand by themselves, for an introduction I have used the text written by Bannister referring to them from the introduction to Charles Bothe's register.]

THE REGISTERS OF FOXE AND BONER.

The Registers of Edward Foxe and Edmund Boner being so short, their lives so well known, and their connection with the diocese so slight, [1] nothing need be said of them here. But since

[1] Boner was actually translated to London before his consecration.

Introduction.

Foxe was one of the earliest bishops consecrated after the great surrender of the clergy to Henry as "supreme head" of the English Church, [1] I have decided to print the account of his election, as given in the Act Book of the chapter (Liber Primus, fol. 74):-

To our trusty and welbelovyd the dene and chapytor of our cathedral church of Hereford. By ye king.

Trusty and welbelovyd, we gret you well, and for as muche as that your church and diocese is, by the death of the late byshop ther, now destitute of a pastor and hede, we consideryng the lernyng, virtue and manyfold good qualities which by diverse argumentes we have approved to be in our trusty and right welbelovyd counceller, Mr. Edwarde Foxe, our almoner, we have namyd him to be your byshoppe ther. [1] In the opening both of the Foxe and of the Boner registers the words in terris ecclesie Anglicane supremum sub Christo caput are added to the king's titles (See pp. 36l, 383).

Introduction.

To my lovyng brethren the presidente and chapytor of Hereford.

In my right harty maner I commend me unto you, and understanding as well by the report of the berer as by the letters of my lovynge frynde Mr. Skydmor, the good conformytie and towardnesse you were of in that your late election of me to be your bishope, with the singler rejoyse and gladenesse you had for the same, and consideryng the same to have proceded of your good hertes and affections towardes me, I geve unto you therfor my right hertie thankes, assuryng you that you have bounde me therby to studie to my possible power in tyme cumyng not oonlie to love and favour you, minister to you, and to every of you such gratinitie and pleasure as shall lye in my power, but also to answer to that expectacon and good hope you have conceaved of me.
