ALCHESTER, (Oxfordshire) a little to the S.W. of Bicester. As the name signifies an old castle, the bounds, of a quadrangular compass, are still to be seen here, though the area, or site of it has been, for a long time, part of the common field of Wendlebury, and it stands upon the Roman consular way, called Akeman-street.
