ALDERLEY, (Gloucestershire) near Wotton-Underedge, is a p. 5 m. in compass and lies on the side of a hill bet. 2 rivulets, which join and fall into the Avon. The manor was bought by Mr. Hale (a Defendant of Sir Mat. Ld. Ch. Just.) who was buried in its church-yard, An. 1676. In the same place are several tombs of the family of the Crews (descended of the Cheshire Crews) who settled in this place above 300 years ago. On some of the Hills here, are found great numbers of cockle and oyster-shells, or rather serpentine-stones and scollops, which some think are the sport of nature, and others that they are really the shells of fish thrown up here by the sea in the universal deluge.
