ASHTED, (Surrey) near Epsom-Wells, one of the sweetest situations in England, was formerly the Lp. of Sir John Montfort, of Warwickshire, from whose relations it passed to the family of Sir Roger Aston. It was afterwards in the possession of Sir Robert Howard, brother to the E. of Berkshire, who built a fine house here, and enclosed it with a park. This was since the estate and seat of Mr. Fielding, uncle to the late E. of Denbigh. The Ch. stands on the edge of the park, and has several fine monuments; particularly one for Henry Newdigate, Esq; Ld. of the manor, and brother of the late Sir John Newdigate, of Arbury in Warwickshire.
