ASHTON-CANTLOW, (Warwickshire) or ASHTON-CANTILUPE, on the S. bank of the r. Alne, to the E. of Aulcester; for which reason, in old records it is written Eston, or East-Town. After the arrival of Will. the Conq. we find it possessed by the Osborns. In the R. of Hen. II. it was farmed by one Tankerville; and in that of K. John, it was given to William de Cantelupe; from whose descendants the T. had the name, to diftinguish it from the other Ashtons in the Co. It came afterwards to the Hastings, the Beauchamps and Nevils, Lds. of Abergavenny. One of the Cantilupes gave its Ch. to the mon, of Studely. His heirs recovered it, but William de Clinton gave it afterwards to the canons of Markstoke.
