AYLMOUTH, (Northumberland) so called from its being at the mouth of the r. Alne, 4 m. E. of Alnewick; was one of the forfeited estates of Hen. Earl of Northumberland, which Edw. IV. settled on his brother the D. of Clarence, for the better support of his dignity of Ld. Lieutenant of Ireland. It's said the bones of giants are often dug up on the shore of the r. near this town.
