BAGSHOT, (Surrey) bet. Stains and Hartley-row; 7 m. from Windsor, and 23 cm. and 29 mm. from London. It has one or two good inns, but is most famous for its mutton, the sheep killed by the butchers here being generally brought from the downs of Hampshire. It was formerly called Holy-hall, and was the Lp. of our Ks. who had a house here and a park, which was laid open after the civil-wars. K. James and K. Ch. I. often came hither to hunt. Bagshot-heath is a barren desert, with nothing but Furze, extending for a great many ms. in Berkshire and Hampshire. The D. of Roxburgh, the E. of Arraa, &c. have seats on it.
