BAKEWEL, (Derbyshire) the best T. on the N. W. side of the Peak, stands 114 m. from London, on the Wye, near its influx into the Derwent. It is a large T. with seven chapels, though but one Ch. which is a peculiar exempt from episcopal jurisdiction. It is supposed to have been a Roman T. because of altars dug up near it some years ago at Haddon-house, anciently the seat of the Vernons, and since of the Ds. of Rutland. Its Mt. is on M. and chiefly for lead, and its Fairs are Feb. 27, Aug. 15, Sept. 21.
