BALLES, (Hertfordshire) in the hamlet of Little Amwell, a noble seat, so called at first from its owner (in the R. of Edw. I.) one of the burgesses of Hertford. From him it passed to William Hendmarsh by whose daughter it went to Richard Willis, Esq; of Horningsey in Cambridgeshire; but his son sold it to Sir John Harrison, in whose family it has remained ever since, and was the retirement of governor Harrison from Fort St. George in the East-Indies.
