BARMESTON, (Essex) called also BARMYSTON and BARNESTON, is near Dunmow, and supposed to have been built by some of the Berners family, in the R. of Edw. I. from it passed, after some successions, to Thomas de Woodstock. 6th son to Edw. III. after which, it being forfeited to the crown, K. Hen.VIII. gave it to Sir John Gate; who also forfeiting it to Q. Mary; she gave it the Ld. Rich, in whose family it remained, 'till it was sold to Sir William Wylde, Bart, the judge, from whom it came to his son, Sir Felix.
