BAROUGHDON, (Rutland) 4 m. N. E. of Haringworth, on the other side of the r. Weland. K. Hen. II. gave this manor to William Mauduit, one of whose descendants was E. of Warwick. In the R. of Edw. II. we find it in the hands of the Colviles, the Uffords, and of Thomas Beauchamp, E. of Warwick, whose heir forfeited it; and Rich. II. granted it to Thomas Mowbray, D. of Norfolk, but K. Hen. IV. restored it to the E. of Warwick. It came again afterwards to the crown, and Edw. VI. granted it, with other Lps. then called Warwick lands, to his sister Elizabeth, afterwards Q. She had not held it long, when it was demised to William Cecil, afterwards Ld. Burleigh and his heirs, so that it is now the manor of the E. of Exeter. It had formerly a Mt. and Fair granted by Edw. III. but both long since disused; and in the popish time here was a chantry.
