BASING, (Hampshire) on the N. E. side of Basingstoke, gives title of Baron, St. John to the D. of Bolton, who has a seat here built out of the ruins of Basing-house by his ancestor, John, Marquiss of Winchester, which was formerly a garrison for K. Ch. I. and was besieged several times by the Pt. forces in vain; but taken by storm by O. Cromwell, the 14th of Oct. 1645, and the Marquiss with 400 others made prisoners. The house was a spacious beautiful seat, which was soon after demolished; and, according to the report made to the Pt. by Hugh Peters, who was at the taking of it, fit for an Emperor. There was a bed in it, said to be valued at 1400 l. The Marquiss, from its gallant defence, called the house Love Loyalty, which he caused to be written with a diamond in every window of it; and Aymes Loyaulie, which is the same in French, has ever since been the motto of the arms of this noble family. The Marquiss's loyalty was reckoned the more extraordinary, because he was a catholick.
