BAXTERLEY, (Warwickshire) 4 m. W. of Atherston, is a hamlet of Grendon, which, after being the estate of Henry de Ferrers, came to the E. of Warwick, of whom it was held by Richard de Harecourt; from whom it passed to Lovel, whose son sold it to John Chetwind in the R. of Hen. I. Part of it was sold by his descendant to a gentleman, whose feoffees passed it to the abbey of Merevale; and after the ref. it was purchased of the crown by Walter de Devereux, Ld. Ferrers of Chartley, and consequently in possession of Robert, E. of Essex, in 1640. Baxterley-hall in this moiety was built by John Clover, one of his retainers. The other moiety was in the R. of Edw. IV. possessed by Judge Littleton, whose descendant, Sir Edw. Littleton of Pillaton-hall, Staffordshire, sold it to trustees for the freeholders, in whom it now resteth. Here is a ch. s.
