BEACHY-HEAD, (Sussex) near Pevensey, and bet. Hastings and Shoreham, so called from the adjacent beach, is reckoned the
highest cliff of all the S. coast of England, for it projects over the beach to a greater perpendicular heighth, than the
monument of London. Hares, closely pursued, have tumbled over the edge of the precipice, with a hound or two after them,
and been dashed to pieces. The beach, where in stormy weather so many ships have been lost, has several large caverns made
in it by the sea. From hence, to beyond Arundel, the country, along the coast, for a great breadth, rises into those high
hills called the South-downs.
