BEAR, (Devon) in the road from Lyme to Exeter, and 4 m. from Flymouth, was called Bear-Ferris, from the ancient family of Ferrers. In the R. of Hen. VI. here were silver mines, which were re-enter'd by the late Sir John Maynard, but have been since discontinued. The rectory here is a good benefice, the p. being so large, that it had formerly two chapels of ease. The Ch. is at one end of the p. close by the banks of the r. Tamar, with only a few cottages near it, and here was formerly a chantry.
