BEDINGTON, (Surrey) near Croydon, the seat and manor of the Carews family, who have the honour to be Baronets, and have a fine orangery of trees, of 100 years standing, brought out of Italy by Sir Francis Carew, Bt. They are set in the open ground, but secured in the winter by moveable coverts, and supposed to be the first ever planted in England. Sir Francis abovementioned, who built this pleasure-house, had the Spanish armado in 1588 painted on the top of it, and made a cold- bath under it. In the Ch. are several stalls, after the manner of cathedrals, in the N. and S. isles; and here is one ch. s. for boys, and another for girls.
