ST. BENNETS, (Norfolk) a little to the S. E. of Repeham, commonly called St. Bennets in the Holme, i.e. a river-island, had formerly a mon. built by the Danish K. Canute, and so fortified by the monks, that it was more like a castle than a cloister, and held out so long against William the Conqueror, that he could not take it, 'till it was betrayed to him by one of the monks, on condition that he should be abbot; but he was hanged for his treachery. The soil of this island is very fenny.
