*BLECHINGLEY, (Surrey) 5 m. from Ryegate, and 20 from London, is a small ancient parliamentary bor. by prescription, having enjoyed that privilege ever since Pts. had a being; yet has no Mt. but has Fairs on June 11, and Nov. 2. It had a castle, which with the manor is, or was lately in the family of Sir William Clayton; to which it came, by purchase, from the E. of Peterborough. The bailiff, who returns its members, is chosen yearly at the Ld. of the manor's court. The T. stands on a hill, on the side of Holmsdale, with a fine prospedt as far as the S. Downs and Sussex: And from some ruins of its castle, which are still visible, tho' overgrown with a coppice, there is a prospect E. into Kent, and W. into Hampshire. Here is an alm. and a fr. s. Its handsome Ch. had a spire, which in 1606 was consumed by lightning, and all the bells melted,
