BULNESS, (Cumberland) at the end of the Picts-wall, on the Solway-Firth, from whence Antoninus begins his itinerary; and from whence the people say a paved causey ran formerly along the shore to Elenborough, of which, though few or no tokens appear, yet tracks of streets, and pieces of old walls are often discovered in ploughing the common fields, as well as Roman coins and inscriptions; and not many years ago was dug up here a small brazen figure of a Mercury or Victory, late in the custody of Mr. Aglienby. This was anciently the head town of a large manor, containing many hamlets, of which it is still the mother-church, and has a fort on its promontory.
