BURNTWOOD, (Essex) or BRENTWOOD, 15 cm. and above 17 mm. from London, is one of the 4 hamlets to the p. of Southwold cum Brent, and stands on a hill in the road from London to Harwich, so that it has good inns, and is a populous place, where the assizes have been held several times. On Parslow-Wood common near it, are frequent horse-races. The Mt. is Th. and Fair July 7. both granted by K. Stephen to the abbot of St. Osyth. Here was formerly a chantry founded by Isabel daughter to K. Edw. III.
