BURSTOW, (Surrey) on the b. of Sussex, not far from E. Grinsted, was in the R. of Rich. I. the Lp. of Stephen Fitz-Hamon, who, according to the custom of those times, assumed the name of his manor; and from him descended the family of the Burstows of this co. and that of Byshe. About 80 years ago, a petty Fair was held here on St. Bartholomew's day, since disused. In this p. formerly dwelt the Tyrrels, a family of note. The manor has a court-leet and a court-baron, and has several very large commons in it with fish-ponds. New-chapel is a hamlet in this p. near a large common, where formerly stood the chapel from whence it takes its name.
