BYGRAVE-HALL, (Hertfordshire) on the Roman-way, call'd Ikeningstreet, 1 m. and a half N. W. of Baldock. Its Ch. was formerly given to the abby of St. Albans. Sir William Elrington enjoyed the manor in the R. of Edw. III. It was afterwards sold to Sir John Thornbury, and being from his family conveyed to the crown, was granted by Hen. VIII. to James Needham, who paid to Edw. VI. 3 l. a year for it. After the death of Needham, it was sold to William Warren, whose son built the manor-house, and sold it to Sir John Heveningham of a Suffolk family, whose son sold it to Francis Cleaver of London; as did his son, Sir Charles (so created in 1660) to James, E. of Salisbury; from whom it descended to the present E.
