*CAMELFORD, (Cornwall) 184 cm. and 250 mm. from London, stands near the r. Camel, alias Alan, is governed by a mayor and 8 ald. a recorder and town-clerk, and has for its arms a camel passing over a ford. It was here that K. Arthur, born not far oft, was mortally wounded by his nephew Mordred, who was killed on the spot. A bloody battle is also said to have been fought here in 823, bet. the Saxons and Britons. It was created a free bor. by Richard, E. of Cornwal, K. of the Romans, who granted it the Mt. on F. and a Fair on the eve, day and morrow of St. Swithin. It began to send members to Pt. in the 6th of the R. of Edw. VI. The manor has been anciently held of the duchy of Cornwal; but the T. which is very small, bel. to the p. of Lanteglos, about 1 m. off. Its charter of incorporation is said to have been granted by Ch. I. Its Fairs are on the first Fr. after the 10th of March, and on May 15, July 7, and Aug. 26.
