CARESBROOK-CASTLE, (Isle of Wight) on the S. side of Newport, the seat of the governor of the island, was built by the Saxons, and had once a Mon. K. Ch. I. was a prisoner here 13 months. Here is a well that supplies the castle with water, which is no less than 72 yards deep; and the water is drawn up by a large wheel, turned by an ass as a spit is by a dog. There was one in 1747 that had been 40 years in that service.
