CASTOR, (Norfolk) 3 m. S. of Norwich, was the Venta Icenorum of the Romans, who had a garrison here and several of their urns have been found in it. 'Twas the most flourishing city in these parts; but it fell to decay, and Norwich rose on its ruins. The manor was anciently in the possession of the Redehams; from whom it came to Sir Oliver Ingham, Knt. who sold it in the R. of Edw. II. to Tho. Fastolf. Camden calls this place Castor St. Edmund, and says, that Edmund the Danish K. kept his court here, and that it was the seat of the famous Sir John Fastolf, in the R. of Hen. V. It bel. to the family of the Pastons in the R. of Edw. IV. but we are informed, that it was some time ago sold to one Mr. Crow of London, and that from him it went to a gentleman of that Name at Yarmouth.
