CHARD, (Somerset) 116 cm. and 140 mm. from London, is a post T. which, in the R. of Hen. III. was made a Free Bor, and sent members to Pt. nine times, but lost that privilege by its own Negligence; and the assizes were also held here formerly. It has several streams running thro' it, which keep it clean, and one, in particular, which, by being turned N. or S. will, 'tis affirmed, run into the Severn or the British channel. It has 4 streets that terminate near the Mt. which is on Tu. and Fairs on Lady-day, St. James's and, All-Saints days. Here are 2 almsh. and a small woollen mf. there being fulling-mills in the neighbourhood. Here was once a chantry.
