CHARLEY, (Leicestershire) or CHARNWOOD, a little to the S. W. of Loughborough, gave name to a forest near it, 20 m. in compass. Soon after the conquest, it was disforested, yet restored by Hen. II. but was again disforested by Hen. III. as it remains to this day. K. Edw. I. gave this Lp. and forest to Comim the Earl of Buchan, for his assistance of his designs in Scotland, during the dispute bet. Baliol and Bruce; and his grand-daughter marrying the Ld. Beaumont, one of his descendants inclosed a park in this forest, which, to this day, is called Beaumont-Park.
