CHARLWOOD, (Surrey) to the S. of Rygate, on the b. of Sussex. In the R. of Edw. I. 'twas the Lp. of John de Bensted, and before the Ref. bel. to the men. of Christchurch Canterbury. It came afterwards to the Saunders family, of whose heirs it was bought by Sir Will. Throckmorton, in 1600, in whose family it continued many years; but in the R. of K. Will. III. we find it possessed by Rob. Wile, who had the care of the gardens at his palace of Kensington. The Ch. is a peculiar bel. to the See of Canterbury. In this p. is Kilman-Bridge, (vulga Kilberham) so called from a great slaughter of the Danish plunderers upon or near it, by the inn. of this Co. and Sussex.
