CHESTERFIFLD, (Derbyshire) the chief T. in Scarsdale, 9 m. from Bakewell, 106 cm. 116 mm. from London, which stands pleasantly on the side of a hill, bet. 2 rivulets, the Ibber and Rother, was made a free Bor. by K. John, who gave it to Will. Briewer, his favourite. It had formerly a mon. and gave title of E. to Philip, the noble ancestor of the Stanhopes in Nottinghamshire. 'Tis a handsome, populous T. governed by a mayor and ald. and has a fair Ch. but its spire, which is of timber covered with lead, is warped all awry. Here is a new, large Mt. place, well supplied with lead, grocery, mercery, malt, leather, stockings, blankets, bedding, &c. in which it deals considerably, not only over all the Peak, and in Cheshire and Lancashire, but in Yorkshire, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and London. Its Mt. is S, and Fairs Feb. 28, May 4, July 8, and Sept. 14. Here is a fr. sc. reckoned the most considerable in the N. of England; from whence many students are sent to the Us. particularly Cambridge.
