CLAXTON, (Norfolk) on the Yare, near Thurston, and the road from Loddon to Yarmouth, bel. formerly to the Kerdestons; one of whom obtained a Mt. for it on M. since disused, and a Fair at Midsummer, for 5 days; with a license to turn his manor- house into a castle. In the R. of Hen. VI. it passed to the Es. of Suffolk, from whom Charles Brandon, D. of Suffolk, had it. K. Hen. VIII. granted it to Tho. Howard; and Q. Mary to Edward, Ld. North, who sold it to John Throgmorton, and his heirs; of whom it was purchased by Sir Tho. Gawdy, Ld. Ch. Jus. of the common pleas, who, finding an old ruined castle, partly rebuilt it.
