COMPTON-HALL, (Warwickshire) or COMPTON-FENNY, seat of the Earl of Northampton, 4 m. from Banbury, and near Wormleighton, had anciently a vineyard in it, and is therefore sometimes stiled Compton-Winegate. It bel. to the Comptons, even before. the R. of Edw. I. one of which family, viz. William, in the R. of Hen. VIII. who made him Ld. Chan. of Ireland, as he had been his page in the R. of his father, built a fair house here, with a chapel, and added a large park to it, for the use of himself and his heirs for ever, as 'tis said in the patent, wherein 'tis called Compton-Inferior, or Compton-Vineyard. This house was garrison'd for the Pt. in 1646, at which time it was totally demolished; but was rebuilt in 1665, by James, that Earl of Northampton who was constable of the Tower.
