COULSTON-BASSET, (Nottinghamshire) on the S. side of Bingham, bel. formerly to the Bassets of Draiton near Tamworth, one of whom, in the R. of Edw, I. got a Mt. and Fair here. In the R. of Hen. VIII. it bel. to Edw. Stafford, the last D. of Buckingham of that family; who sold it to -Kitson; whose heir, Sir Thomas, sold it to Mr. Golding his steward; whose grandson, Edward Golding, made a Bt. by K. Cha. I. was proprietor of the whole T. except a part which his father, who inclosed most of the fields, sold to Mr. Francis Hacker, whereon he built a house, which was, by his eldest son, Col. Hacker, who guarded K. Cha. I. to the scaffold, forfeited by attainder, with the rest of his lands, which the D. of York sold to Col. Rowland Hacker, his next brother; who afterwards sold his interest here to John Grubham Howe, of Langar, Esq; One of the Bassets built a chapel here, in which he established a chantry. The Ch. stands in the fields, which being inclosed, the T. is thereby depopulated, in the opinion of Dr. Thoroton, who observes, that inclosures, which are thought to enrich other Cos. impoverish this.
