DINCHURCH, (Kent) in Romney-Marsh, joining to the fen, 3 m. 1-half N. E. of Romney. The manor was anciently in the Twithams family, who held it several successions, till it went, by the female heir, to Simon Septuans; and from his family it went, by marriage of the heiress, to Mr. Fogge, who bought some lands here, that were held by the Poynings, to make his manor compleat. In a place here, called New-Hall, built above 100 years ago, are kept the records of Romney-Marsh; and a court, called the Lathe, is held by the Lds. of the marsh and the members of the corp. who are appointed, by a statute 33 of Edw. III. to meet here, or at some other proper place, a fortnight after Michaelmas, to regulate all differences, to make new laws for better management of the Marsh lands and walls, and to take care that the old ones be strictly observed.
