DUNMOW, (Essex) on the Chelmer, 31 cm. 38 mm. from London, gives name to its H. of which the high-sheriff of the Co. is at liberty to appoint the bailiff. 'Tis very ancient, and supposed to be the old Caefaromagus; and in some places, in the direct road from hence to Colchester, are the remains of an old Roman way. 'Tis governed by 12 headboroughs; out of whom the bailiff is chose yearly. Here was formerly a priory; and it is recorded, that in the R. of Hen. III. the Ld. Fitzwalter instituted a custom, which still goes along with the manor, viz. That whatever married man did not repent of his marriage, or quarrel with his wife, in a year and a day after it, would go to this priory, and have a gammon or flitch of bacon; provided that he swore to the truth of it, kneeling upon 2 hard pointed stones in the priory Ch.-yard, before the prior and convent, and the whole T. And the records here mention several persons, who have claimed, some very lately,- and received it accordingly. Here is a good corn Mt. on S. and Fairs Apr. 25, and Oct. 28. The Ch. is near 1 m. from the T. Here is a mf. of bays. Sir John Jenour, Bt. has a seat at Bigwoods here, as had the late Sir Swinnerton Dyer, Bt. at Newton-Hall.
