DUNSTER, (Somerset) 2 m. from Minhead, 130 cm. 164 mm. from London, had a castle, which, with the manor, was bestowed, by Will. the Conq, on Sir Will. Mohun, together with 50 other manors in this Co. whereupon he built the T. about it, with a priory which he made a cell to Bath. It was in later times sold to the Lutterels. The T. stands on a low ground, every where shut in with hills, except towards the Severn-Sea. The castle, now in ruins, consisted of 2 wings, and 3 towers; and has a fine prospect of a vale of 2 m. bounded by the Severn. In the civil wars it was garrisoned for K. Cha. I. but taken by general Blake. 'Twas the prison of Will. Prynn, for refusing to pay taxes to Cromwell, to whom he was then as great an enemy, as he had been before to the K. Here are about 400 houses, and its only mf. is kerseys. The Ch. which is large, has a handsome tower built in the R. of Hen. VII. 'Tis called a Bor. in old writings, and once sent members to Pt. The Mt. is F. Fair on Whit-M.
