EPSOM, (Surrey) 15 cm. 16 mm. from London, long famous for its mineral waters, is a charming place, open to Bansted- Downs, with many handsome seats of the gentry, as well as the merchants and citizens of London. Its purging waters tinctured with allum, which come from a spring near Ashted, were discovered in 1618, and, though not in such repute as formerly, yet they are not impaired in virtue; and the salt made of them is famous all over Europe, for gently cleansing the body, and cooling and purifying the blood. On the neighbouring downs are annually horse-races; but the wells and bowling-greens are not near so much frequented as formerly. The Mt. here is on F. and Fairs in Easterweek, July 24, and Sept. 29; of which Mt. and Fairs, Mr. John Livinston, apothecary, who obtained them, was proprietor. The T. is about 1 m and a half, in a semicircle, from the Ch. to the Ld. Guilford's palace at Durdans. In Hudson's-Lane here was Epsom-Court, that ancient Saxon seat, long since converted into a farm. Here are so many fields, meadows, orchards, gardens, and the like, that a stranger would be at a loss to know whether this was a T. in a wood, or a wood in a T.
