FELSTED, (Essex) on the Chelmer, not far from Dunmow. K. Hen. VIII. granted it to Sir Richard Rich, afterwards Ld. Rich, whose family fixing their residence in the neighbourhood, are buried here. He founded a ch. sc. here, in the R. of Q. Eliz. for 80 children of this Co. allowing a good salary to the master and usher; and an almsh. for 6 poor people, with handsome weekly allowances of malt, meat and money, fewel, pasture for 6 cows, &c. besides this, he ordered that, in Lent, every year such poor of this p. as received not collection should have 6 barrels of white-herrings, besides some cades of red. The school here has produced several eminent scholars, and is in a flourishing state.
