FINCHINGFIELD, (Essex) on the E. side of Thaxted, stands on the r. Freshwell or Pant. This manor was held, in the R. of Edward III. by John de Compes, by the service of turning the spit at his coronation. The Kemps, who dwell at Spain's Hall in this p. are supposed to be descended from that ancient family. Some of them founded an almsh. here, and a ch. sc.
