HALES, (Gloucestershire) near Winchcomb and Teddington, had once a famous abbey; of which there are few or no remains now, but a neat cloister. 'Twas founded, in the R. of Hen. III. by his brother, Richard E. of Cornwall, K. of the Romans, who lies buried here with his Lady. He settled the manor on the said abbey, in which it continued till the Diss. when it was granted, with the scite of the mon. to Sir Tho. Seymour; and after his attainder to William Marq. of Northampton; from whom it passed to Will. Hobby, Esq; and afterwards to the Tracys, who have ever since been Lds. of it. They have a large house here, supposed to have been the habitation of the abbot, from the religious inscriptions and figures in many of the rooms. The Ch. is a chapel of ease to Didbrook.
