It anciently bel. to the Clares Es. of Gloucester, and afterwards to the Mortimers Es. of March; but it coming to the crown, Hen. VIII. made Sir Will. Compton constable of it; from whom are descended the Es. Northampton. It was lately the seat of Edm. Lechmere, Esq.
