HARBOTTLE-MANOR and CASTLE, (Northumberland) near Hallistones, in the valley of Read, or Riddesdale, gave name to a family of considerable note, from the R. of Hen. IV. to this time. In the R. of Hen. II. when this castle bel. to the Umfrayils, it was taken by the Scots, but soon recovered, and restored to that family. Nevertheless it was much ruined, and much neglected afterwards; and being forfeited to the crown by Sir William Talboys, K. Edw. IV. granted it to Sir Rob. Ogle; from whom it came by the heiress to the family of Sir Cha. Cavendish, late D. of Newcastle.
