HEDLEY, (Surrey) 3 m. from Epsom. Near Leatherhead-Down, upon the edge of this p. which has a great deal of wood about it, there is a perfect Roman highway from London to Darking, that appears in several places bet. Guilford and Ripley, and bet. Richmond and Putney. The shepherds of the Downs hereabouts use, what they call a half-horn, i.e, a horn slit lengthways, and nailed to the end of a staff, as long as the shepherds crooks, with which they can hurl a stone a great way, and so keep their sheep within due bounds. This instrument is seen in some pictures and hangings, but is not in use any where else. The late Mrs. Stydolf was Lady of this manor.
