HOLDENBY, (Northamptonshire) near Althorp, where a magnificent seat was built by Sir Christopher Hatton, Ld. Chanc. and Kt. of the Garter in the R. of Q. Eliz. It was afterwards one of the palaces, but for above three months the prison, of K. Cha. I. who was brought hither from Newcastle, after being sold by the Scots, till Cornet Joyce took him away by force, and carried him to the army. In the R. of Cha. II. this place gave the title of Baron to Lewis Duras, afterwards Earl of Feversham. It became the property of the late victorious Duke of Marlborough, and was part of the jointure of the Marchioness of Blandford, relict of his grandson; but it is now turned into a farm-house.
