*HORSHAM, (Sussex) 28 cm. 35 mm. from London, about 3 m. from the main road to Arundel from London, has its name from Horsa, brother to Hengist the Saxon. It was anciently a Lp. of the Howards Ds. of Norfolk, till forfeited to the crown by the attainder of John D. of Norfolk in the R. of Hen. VII. and given to Tho. West Ld. Delawar. It is one of the largest Ts. in the Co. has sent members to Pt. ever since the 30th of Edw. I. and is the place where the Co. gaol is held, and often the assizes. It is a Bor. by prescription, with the title of 2 bailiffs and burgage-holders within and without the Bor. &c. who elect the members of Pt. and they are returned by the bailiffs chose yearly by a court-leet of the Ld. of the manor, who return 4 candidates to the steward, and he nominates 2 of them for the office. Here is a very fine Church, and a well endowed fr. sc. Great store of poultry is bought up for London at its Mt. (which was granted by K. John) on S. and it has a patent also for a monthly Mt. Its Fairs are May 3, M. before Whitsunday, June 24, July 7, for 9 days, and Nov. 19. Here is a quarry of very good stone, either for tiling or flooring.
